Launch529 (“Launch529,” “we,” “us”) helps families track 529 plan spending and stay compliant with IRS qualified-expense rules. This policy explains what information we collect, why, and how it’s handled. Launch529 is not tax advice — consult a qualified professional for decisions about your 529 plan.
Information we collect
We collect information you provide directly and information generated as you use the app:
- Account information: name, email address, and password (handled by our authentication provider, Supabase) or, if you use Google or Apple sign-in, the name and email your provider shares with us.
- Family and student data: family member names, roles (parent, student, accountant), and the schools and 529 plans you add.
- Expense records: amounts, categories, dates, vendors, and any receipts or documents you upload.
- Linked financial accounts: if you choose to connect a 529 plan held at a brokerage, we use Plaid to retrieve read-only account balances and transaction history. We never receive or store your brokerage login credentials — Plaid handles that connection directly.
- Billing information: subscription and payment details are processed by Stripe. We do not store your card number; we retain only the subscription status and a Stripe customer reference.
- Usage information: basic technical data such as IP address, browser type, and pages visited, collected automatically to keep the service secure and reliable.
How we use this information
- To operate the core service: tracking expenses, calculating budgets, and flagging non-qualified spending under IRS Publication 970.
- To send account, billing, and family-activity notifications (e.g. an expense submitted for review).
- To process subscription payments and manage your billing relationship.
- To detect, investigate, and prevent fraud, abuse, or security incidents.
- To improve the product and respond to support requests.
We do not sell your personal information, and we do not use your financial or expense data to serve advertising.
Who we share it with
We share information only with the service providers that help us run Launch529, each bound by their own privacy and security obligations:
- Supabase — authentication, database, and file storage.
- Stripe — subscription billing and payment processing.
- Plaid — optional read-only brokerage account connections.
- Resend — transactional email delivery (receipts, invitations, notifications).
- Vercel — application hosting.
- College Scorecard (U.S. Department of Education) — public school cost-of-attendance data; we send only the school you search for, never your personal information.
Within your family account, expense and budget data is visible to the parents, students, and accountants you’ve added — that shared visibility is the core of how Launch529 works.
We may also disclose information if required by law, or to protect the rights, property, or safety of Launch529, our users, or others.
Data retention
We retain your account and expense data for as long as your account is active. If you close your account, we delete or anonymize your data within a reasonable period, except where we’re required to retain records (for example, billing records) for legal or accounting purposes.
Your choices
- You can access, correct, or export your data at any time from within the app.
- You can disconnect a linked brokerage account at any time; this revokes Launch529’s access via Plaid.
- You can request deletion of your account and associated data by contacting us below.
Security
We use industry-standard measures — encryption in transit, role-based database access controls, and scoped API credentials — to protect your information. No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, so we can’t guarantee absolute security.
Children’s privacy
Launch529 is intended for use by parents and college students, not children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy as the product evolves. We’ll update the “last updated” date above, and for material changes we’ll notify you by email.
